20th Anniversary of Hampton Roads Transit

Hampton Roads Transit 20th Anniversary Seal

October 1, 2019 marked the 20th anniversary of Hampton Roads Transit.

Tidewater Regional Transit and Pentran formally merged on Oct. 1, 1999 to form Hampton Roads Transit. At the same time, the Transportation District Commission of Hampton Roads formed to provide oversight to the new agency.

The voluntary merger of Peninsula Transit and Tidewater Regional Transit was a national first that allowed the two smaller providers to build a larger, more financially resourceful agency to serve a growing Southeastern Virginia.

Since then, the agency has marked its progress with numerous milestones that advance the region’s stake in public transit.
